Even though I've been doing extensive online research, I have yet to find someone else post about his or her favorite dreadlock! Well, ladies and gentlemen, meet Chester. Chester was formed by two of my friends. It took me two whole days to do my locks- one day in my bathroom by myself and the second day with friends finishing the rest. One of my prized memories is of the guys exclaiming, "no way, the dread I am making is better," both in competition to make a gnarlier lock on either side of my head. Sorry, Dan. Chester won. |
- I don't like to get too spiritual or sappy about my dreadlocks that often, but for me personally, it definitely is more than just a hairstyle. This is a journey. For sure, there are good times and bad times. Moments where you question every last loose hair and then receive grand clarity. There are stares and fingers of strangers longing to touch. Conversations seem to center around your locks. But it is all so worth it.
- I have had so much fun working through ideas of perception with this hairstyle. At first, it took me a lot to let go of my need to feed what others thought of me. Then it was absolute admiration of my locks. Then there was the giant "have to get a job" debacle, which made me worry all for nothing because quite honestly I don't think the employer could tell when I had them up. There was another phase of dislike and questioning, which only occurred after I dyed my hair and shrunk up all my dreadies. Then there was brushing some out to attain a compromise in my mind of what I'd like my hair to be.
- I love to adorn my favorite lock with goodies. A year and a half ago, when I started my dreadlocks, I wrapped Chester. He stayed protected throughout the dying process and didn't shrink up like the others. He is now the only one who is big enough to fit the beads I picked up in Oregon.
