So, I did something. Something that I hope will not shame me in the dreadlock community. This week, I tediously combed out some of my locks. I am now a partial dreadhead? I kept my gnarliest babies down at the back of my head/neck. I have been considering this decision for some time, not because I was done with the hairstyle or can't hang- I'm just personally looking for something more feminine. |
- I began with 60 dreadlocks on June 25th, 2014. Over time that number decreased to 51, as a few locks became congos- two dreads that combine into one at the base but still has two tips. Lazy Dreads has more on congos or conjoined locks: http://www.lazydreads.com/2012/10/conjoined-congo-dreads.html
- I combed out 40 locks over 4 days. On average, it took me an hour per dreadlock. My hair was waist length when I began my dreadlocks so I was shocked it didn't take me longer. Dreadlogs.org offers a few ways to remove locks, one of them being the brush-out method: http://www.dreadlocks.org/how-to-remove-dreadlocks/
- I was able to retain chest length hair that I dyed back to my natural dark-brown color. I still have 11 huge and mature dreadlocks at the back of my head. This allows me a sleek ponytail but the luscious locks I admire at the same time.
